A Defence of Uranian Love

A Defence of Uranian Love

$70.58

Edward Perry Warren’s three-volume "A Defence of Uranian Love," written under his pseudonym Arthur Lyon Raile and privately printed in 1928-1930, can be judiciously labelled "the premier paederastic apologia in the language." Warren always and rightly called this work his magnum opus: it is the clearest elucidation of the motives that lay behind his acquisition of Graeco-Roman antiquities for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and other prominent collections. Warren’s acquisition practices converted those antiquities into a "paederastic evangel," as he himself declares, and his Defence is intimately woven into this lifelong, evangelistic mission. "My verses and my prose," writes Warren, "advocate a morality, but it is not the current morality in certain matters." This is understatement at its most playful, for Warren’s "Defence" is a detailed map to a Utopia where "Grecian grandeur" is restored, and the "Christian sublime," all but banished; where masculine virtues topple the feminine that have mistakenly led to democracy, sexual purity, and feminism; where aristocracy, nobleness, and male supremacy establish a civilisation in which Nietzsche would have found himself at home; and where paederasty, in the form familiar to the ancient Spartans, could and needs must flourish. For, according to Warren, "Love" (in this case, Boy-love) "can revive the old Hellenic day." It is this revival – this veritable "Renaissance of Paederasty"-that Warren’s elaborate apologia aims to begin, by reminding Western culture of what it has lost or only forgotten: a sacral Boy-love and its accompanying traditions.

Potential Weapons: A Novella and Stories

Potential Weapons: A Novella and Stories

"First to fade were the names, then the faces, until she ""couldn’t be sure the people once called family ever really ""existed. Sometimes, when she wandered through Chinatown, she wondered whether this middle-aged man or that young mother with the sullen girl was related to her. Relatives. Strangers. There was no way to know."In this vivid, elegantly written debut, Jocelyn Lieu explores the risks of self-discovery. The characters in "Potential Weapons" lead bi-cultural lives, their ethnicity not obvious at first glance. What are you anyway? someone asks. But it is only when cultures clash, when memory is forced into the present moment, that this question can begin to be answered. In the title story, Abi, a young Chinese American woman, attends a Klan rally, in protest, with her white mother. Once there, they are stripped of all "potential weapons," including her mother’s cane. Diana visits the home of her lover’s parents, Holocaust survivors: the mystery of cultural difference and the haunting music of Gulf War TV coverage permeate the encounter. Through a chance meeting in New York’s Chinatown, Mar discovers her estranged Aunt Pearl, who turns out to be the family’s most intriguing secret, a link to a past colored by the struggle to survive.

Weapons of Mass Seduction

Fortysomething and still single, music-video exec Pia Jamison has given up her grandiose ideas on men and marriage but not motherhood. Her biological clock is on red alert, but after years of self-imposed celibacy she has no clue how to attract the man she needs to get the baby she wants. Help comes in the form of Pia’s savvy assistant, who tricks her boss into attending, under the guise of a business conference, a flirting workshop called Weapons of Mass Seduction. There Pia meets other women looking to amp up their amorous arsenals, including the devastated Texas belle Florence Chase, who’s trying to save her failing marriage; and Rebecca Vossel, a twenty-two-year-old small-town biracial girl who’s dying to release her inner diva. What they learn about the art of sensuality and flirtation turns them into bona fide bombshells. The three return home, armed and deliciously dangerous, to spectacular results. Florence reunites with her husband, but the new and improved Flo must now determine if she’s staying in her marriage out of happiness or habit. The plain Jane Rebecca has transformed herself into the super-sexed "Becca," but will she realize when she’s gone to far? And Pia is happily pregnant but unexpectedly falls in love–not with the father of her unborn child but with a sexy and very conservative candidate for the U.S. Senate. "Weapons of Mass Seduction" is a fun and sexy book (think of it as a flirting workshop within a novel) that promises to unleash the sensual woman in you

The Home Guard

The Home Guard

$13.13

During the uncertain early months of World War 2, many feared that it was only a short time before an attempt would be made to invade a woefully undefended British mainland. What became Home Guard was formed in February 1940 to help defend Britain’s shores from attack, initially just in Dover, but, after the beginning of Hitler’s Blitzkrieg, all over Britain. Originally called the Local Defence Volunteers, this army of men, drawn from those too old and too young to enlist in the regular army were equipped with uniforms, equipment and the know-how to repel the invader-at least such was the goal. Huge numbers volunteered and by midsummer 1940 1.5 million men had been recruited. They were promised uniforms, weapons and training, but at first weapons were in short supply, the Home Guard becoming well known for its old, worn weapons shared by many men at best, and pitchforks and shotguns at worst. Training and equipment later improved, but the image of the Home Guard as an ill-equipped force persisted and was affectionately mocked in the BBC’s ‘Dad’s Army’ which has turned the Home Guard into legend. This concise history of the LDV and Home Guard is illustrated throughout with photographs and ephemera, and includes the ’202′ battalions – ‘Churchill’s Secret Army’ which received special covert training to lead resistance had the German army succeeded in invading the British mainland.

The European Union and National Defence Policy

The European Union and National Defence Policy

$4.11

Filling a surprising gap in existing studies, this book addresses many of the unanswered questions surrounding the role of european integration in shaping national defence policy. The impressive array of contributors consider the pressures on state policy emanating from the process of integration. The book is divided into three distinct parts: * an outline of the tortuous history of attempts to link defence with European integration * a study of the four larger member states – France, Germany, Italy and the UK as well as a chapter on The Netherlands; * an analysis of the effects of the nuclear weapons and arms procurement policies. This, the second book in The State and the European Union series, sheds light on an increasingly important and topical aspect of contemporary European security and will be essential reading for those studying European Politics, Public Policy and International Relations.

ARP and Civil Defence in the Second World War

ARP and Civil Defence in the Second World War

$11.91

In 1938, Britain prepared for war, and to spread the word about what should be done in the event of attack, and to distribute the gas masks that would become universal, a body of men and women were called to public service – the Air Raid Precautions, or ‘ARP’. Armed initially with only a badge of appointment, they became the object of public scorn. From the declaration through to early 1940, the volunteer services honed their skills in the face of public criticism. The ARP services – now a well-oiled machine with, among other specialists, wardens, rescue workers, first aiders and messengers – waited under the blackout. In 1940 came the ‘Blitz’ – and the laughing stopped. The ARP were in the frontline, assisting people to the shelters, reporting on the bombing and rescuing people from their wrecked homes. The Women’s Voluntary Service was also vital at this time, providing food, shelter and sustenance to those made homeless. Alongside the ARP were the men and women of the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS), working with the county fire services, and to coordinate and organise the public, the Police were put on a war footing, with an increase in the volunteer Special Constabulary and War Reserves. In the thick of things, the fire services and AFS battled the fires that raged through British cities throughout the War. As the war progressed, so did the volunteer ‘army’ of Civil Defence. It became sophisticated, and Britons became familiar with living in the front line. The fire services were nationalized to create the National Fire Service (NFS), and in 1941 The Fire Guard was established. The ARP became truly a ‘home army’ of non-combatants – the Civil Defence, and this book is its story.

Kamikaze: Japanese Special Attack Weapons 1944-45

Kamikaze: Japanese Special Attack Weapons 1944-45

$9.69

The destruction of much of the remainder of the Japanese fleet and its air arm in the later half of 1944 left the Japanese Home Islands vulnerable to attack by US naval and air forces. In desperation, the Imperial Japanese Navy proposed using "special attack" formations, a euphemism for suicide attacks. These initially consisted of crude improvisations of conventional aircraft fitted with high-explosive bombs that could be crashed into US warships. Called "Divine Wind" (Kamikaze), the special attack formations first saw action in 1944, and became the scourge of the US fleet in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945. In view of the success of these attacks, the Japanese armed forces began to develop an entire range of new special attack weapons. This book begins by examining the initial kamikaze aircraft attacks, but the focus of the book is on the dedicated special attack weapons developed in 1944, including the Ohka, a rocket-powered guided missile and the Kaiten man-guided torpedo submarines. It also covers specialized suicide attack weapons such as anti-tank lunge mines. Much of the information in this book comes from little known US intelligence reports and photos compiled after the war that have never been widely published.

Fighting with Blade, Bayonet & Staff Weapons: Two Guides to the Art of Close Combat

$19.96

Broad-Sword and Single-Stickby R. G. Allanson-Winn and C. Phillipps-Wolley The Art of Fencing by Monsieur L’Abbat Close combat techniques from a bygone age For good value this book combines two excellent instructional pieces on the art of close quarter combat with edged weapons and staves. The first book deals comprehensively with the use of the short sword, bayonet, staves and various other clubs and even gives instruction on personal defence using everyday items such as umbrellas. The second book is a classic monograph on fighting-not necessarily according to the rules of modern sport-when both opponents are armed with sharp edged weapons, this provides an interesting insight into a time when combat was invariably fought ‘eye to eye.’ Re-enactors and all those interested in the history of warfare before the domination of the bullet and explosive shell will find these two books in a single volume to be an invaluable source of information on one-to-one combat techniques. Available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket.

Home Guard Manual 1941

Home Guard Manual 1941

$14.81

Find out about the real Dad’s Army, from the manual used to train them. Two weeks before Dunkirk, Anthony Eden, Minister of War, announced to the nation on BBC radio his concept of a Local Defence Volunteer force. It was a grim time The Germans were routing the French and British in Belgium and France, Norway was lost, and within two weeks, the cream of Britain’s fighting forces would be weaponless and kit-less, seeking rescue from the beaches of Dunkirk. Eden’s words echoed around every living room in the country: ‘In order to volunteer, what you have to do is give in your name at your local police station; and then, as and when we want you, we will let you know.’The motley assortment of men, most either too old or too young to join the army, became the nucleus of the Home Guard. Untried and without weapons, they would be called upon to halt the invasion that Hitler planned as he stood on the cliffs near Calais, eyeing Britain and its populace as his next conquest. Over a period of a few months, this rag-tag group was armed, uniformed and trained, using the Home Guard Manual. Learning how to construct booby traps, destroy tanks, ambush the enemy, survive in the open, use basic camouflage, read maps and send signals, the fledgling volunteer was turned into a veritable fighting machine, leaving the army to retrain, re-equip and fight elsewhere.

Security and Defence in the Terrorist Era: Canada and the United States Homeland

$17.74

The author argues that since the Second World War Canada has assumed that potential threats will come from overseas rather than from within its borders. Security and Defence in the Terrorist Era shows that Canada’s safety depends upon paying equal attention to threats at home and insists that we must consider the effect of climate change on the Arctic as seriously as terrorist threats and ballistic missile defence. Covering a range of pertinent subjects with detail and expertise, this new edition provides timely information and prescriptions for keeping North America safe.

The Pegasus and Orne Bridges: Their Capture, Defence and Relief on D-Day

The Pegasus and Orne Bridges: Their Capture, Defence and Relief on D-Day

$31.48

The glider-borne operation to capture Pegasus Bridge has an established place in the annals of warfare. Conducted by Major John Howard and his company of Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry it was a superbly daring, brilliantly executed ‘coup de main’ assault. Equally brave was the seizure of the Orne bridges by airborne forces and the defense against ferocious German counter attacks over a prolonged period. The author who has a deep specialized knowledge of the are and period uses extensive personal accounts to tell this thrilling and inspiring story. He covers events and operations from Ranville in the East to Benouville in the West and this embraces the fierce fighting by 7th, 12th and 13th Parachute Battalions and reinforcements such as the Commandos, sea borne engineers and the Warwicks. This splendid book will be enjoyed by those at home and those who are lucky enough to visit these historic sites.

Liberty in the Age of Terror: A Defence of Civil Liberties and Enlightenment Values

Liberty in the Age of Terror: A Defence of Civil Liberties and Enlightenment Values

$4.95

"The means of defence against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home." James Madison Our societies, says Anthony Grayling, are under attack not only from the threat of terrorism, but also from our governments’ attempts to fight that threat by reducing freedom in our own societies – think the 42-day detention controversy, CCTV surveillance, increasing invasion of privacy, ID Cards, not to mention Abu Ghraib, rendition, Guantanamo… As Grayling says: ‘There should be a special place for political irony in the catalogues of human folly. Starting a war ‘to promote freedom and democracy’ could in certain though rare circumstances be a justified act; but in the case of the Second Gulf War that began in 2003, which involved reacting to criminals hiding in one country (Al Qaeda in Afghanistan or Pakistan) by invading another country (Iraq), one of the main fronts has, dismayingly, been the home front, where the War on Terror takes the form of a War on Civil Liberties in the spurious name of security. To defend ‘freedom and democracy’, Western governments attack and diminish freedom and democracy in their own country. By this logic, someone will eventually have to invade the US and UK to restore freedom and democracy to them.’ In this lucid and timely book, Grayling sets out what’s at risk, engages with the arguments for and against examining the cases made by Isaiah Berlin and Ronald Dworkin on the one hand, and Roger Scruton and John Gray on the other, and finally proposes a different way to respond that makes defending the civil liberties on which western society is founded the cornerstone for defeating terrorism.

The Nuclear Question: The United States and Nuclear Weapons, 1946 1976

The Nuclear Question: The United States and Nuclear Weapons, 1946 1976

$3.46

Originally published in 1979, this book is a history of American nuclear weapons policy that tells how the United States learned to live with the bomb. Little of what has been written about nuclear weapons is historical. Most people concerned with the problems of nuclear armaments have asked ‘what is to be done?’ rather than ‘what has happened and why?’ But The Nuclear Question is more than a chronology. It offers original and provocative arguments about the development of military strategy and arms limitations with the Soviet Union, and focuses in particular on the Kennedy administration. During that period the innovations of Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara, the Cuban missile crisis, and the Limited Test Ban Treaty combined to establish the main lines of nuclear policy that the United States follows today. This book will have great appeal to specialists who follow the technical developments of armaments and the political responses to those developments and to the general reader who does not feel at home in discussions of throw-weights, cruise missiles and MIRVs. Written in a clear, readable style, The Nuclear Question will be a valuable book for anyone who wishes to understand better the nuclear issues of our time.

Secret Weapons: Defenses of Insects, Spiders, Scorpions, and Other Many-Legged Creatures

Secret Weapons: Defenses of Insects, Spiders, Scorpions, and Other Many-Legged Creatures

$24.29

Mostly tiny, infinitely delicate, and short-lived, insects and their relatives–arthropods–nonetheless outnumber all their fellow creatures on earth. How lowly arthropods achieved this unlikely preeminence is a story deftly and colorfully told in this follow-up to the award-winning "For Love of Insects." Part handbook, part field guide, part photo album, "Secret Weapons" chronicles the diverse and often astonishing defensive strategies that have allowed insects, spiders, scorpions, and other many-legged creatures not just to survive, but to thrive. In sixty-nine chapters, each brilliantly illustrated with photographs culled from Thomas Eisner’s legendary collection, we meet a largely North American cast of arthropods–as well as a few of their kin from Australia, Europe, and Asia–and observe at firsthand the nature and extent of the defenses that lie at the root of their evolutionary success. Here are the cockroaches and termites, the carpenter ants and honeybees, and all the miniature creatures in between, deploying their sprays and venom, froth and feces, camouflage and sticky coatings. And along with a marvelous bug’s-eye view of how these secret weapons actually work, here is a close-up look at the science behind them, from taxonomy to chemical formulas, as well as an appendix with instructions for studying chemical defenses at home. Whether dipped into here and there or read cover to cover, "Secret Weapons" will prove invaluable to hands-on researchers and amateur naturalists alike, and will captivate any reader for whom nature is a source of wonder.

Britain's War Machine: Weapons, Resources, and Experts in the Second World War

Britain’s War Machine: Weapons, Resources, and Experts in the Second World War

$38.94

The familiar image of the British in the Second World War is that of the plucky underdog taking on German might. David Edgerton’s bold, compelling new history shows the conflict in a new light, with Britain as a very wealthy country, formidable in arms, ruthless in pursuit of its interests, and in command of a global production system. Rather than belittled by a Nazi behemoth, Britain arguably had the world’s most advanced mechanized forces. It had not only a great empire, but allies large and small. Edgerton shows that Britain fought on many fronts and its many home fronts kept it exceptionally well supplied with weapons, food and oil, allowing it to mobilize to an extraordinary extent. It created and deployed a vast empire of machines, from the humble tramp steamer to the battleship, from the rifle to the tank, made in colossal factories the world over. Scientists and engineers invented new weapons, encouraged by a government and prime minister enthusiastic about the latest technologies. The British, indeed Churchillian, vision of war and modernity was challenged by repeated defeat at the hands of less well-equipped enemies. Yet the end result was a vindication of this vision. Like the United States, a powerful Britain won a cheap victory, while others paid a great price. Putting resources, machines and experts at the heart of a global rather than merely imperial story, Britain’s War Machine demolishes timeworn myths about wartime Britain and gives us a groundbreaking and often unsettling picture of a great power in action. "A stunning booktold with authority, clarity and compelling energy." –James Holland, author of The Battle Of Britain "Absolutely fascinating. This book will make you think differently about Britain’s role in the Second World War." –Laurence Rees, author of Auschwitz: The Nazis and the "Final Solution" "A remarkable achievement. He re-envisions Britain’s role in the Second World War and with it Britain’s place in modernity. The period will never look the same again." –Adam Tooze, author of The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy

The Next World War: Computers Are the Weapons and the Front Line is Everywhere

The Next World War: Computers Are the Weapons and the Front Line is Everywhere

$25.83

It is a silent, invisible, and deadly weapons system. It can paralyze an entire nation without a single soldier being sent to war. We glimpsed its potential on television when surgical strikes on radar sites, electrical power plants, and command networks crippled Iraqi forces during the Gulf War. Now, in "The Next World War, " James Adams shows how a new chapter in military history is being written as the Information Age comes to the battlefield: to bigger and stronger, now add smarter. As increasingly sophisticated computers and microtechnology have become available, the concept of "conventional" warfare has changed. Technology has already made its way to the front lines: soldiers are now equipped, for example, with new "smart" technologies such as handheld computers that allow them to e-mail their commanders. There are devices that can sense an enemy’s presence before the enemy is visible, by detecting body heat or by communication with satellites overhead. Robotic "bugs" can even be sent in swarms to sabotage weapons or subdue enemy soldiers. But the most significant and important use of information warfare won’t be on the battlefield. The most devastating weapons will be those that target an enemy’s infrastructure — air-control systems, electrical grids, and communication networks, to name just a few potential targets. "Trojan horse" chips or viruses designed to accept and respond to commands from U.S. military intelligence can be installed in computers being sold overseas, making them vulnerable to attack. By hacking into computer systems, the United States could override programmed commands and thus shut down air traffic control systems, and open floodgates and bridges. Misinformation could even be broadcast, for example, by using imaging technology to simulate a television appearance by an enemy nation’s leaders. This type of combat puts civilians at more risk than ever, as financial, communication, transportation, and other infrastructure systems become prime military targets. And information warfare puts the United States — a nation increasingly dependent on technology — in a position of both definite advantage and extreme vulnerability. In "The Next World War, " James Adams draws on impressive research as well as his lifetime of reporting on intelligence and military affairs to give us a chilling scenario of how wars will be fought in the new millennium — and how much closer to home they might strike.

Excerpt: Cruiser is a type of large warship, which had its prime period from the late 19th century to the end of the Cold War. The first cruisers were intended for individual raiding and protection missions on the seas. Over the years, the nature and role of the cruiser has changed considerably, and today the cruiser has largely been replaced by destroyers in its roles. Historically, a ‘cruiser’ was not a type of ship but a warship role. Cruisers were shipsoften frigates or smaller vesselsthat were assigned a role largely independent from the fleet; in a sense, cruising independently. Typically, this might involve missions such as raiding enemy merchant shipping. In the late 19th century, the term ‘cruiser’ came to mean ships designed to fulfill such a role, and from the 1890s to the 1950s a ‘cruiser’ was a warship larger than a destroyer but smaller than a battleship. For much of 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, cruisers were a navy’s long-range ‘force projection’ weapons, while the larger ships stayed nearer home. Their main role was to attack enemy merchant vessels, so much so that this task came to be called cruiser warfare. Other roles included reconnaissance, and cruisers were often attached to the battle fleet. In the later 20th century, the decline of the battleship left the cruiser as the largest and most powerful surface combatant. The role of the cruiser, however, increasingly became one of providing air defence for a fleet, rather than independent cruiser warfare. At the beginning of the 21st century, cruisers were the heaviest surface combatant ships in use, with only five nations (the United States, Russia, France, Italy, and Peru) operating them. Following the Italian Navy’s 2003 decommissioning of Vittorio Veneto (550… More:

 Europe and Global Security

Europe and Global Security

$19.95

In the twenty-first century, the European Union is confronted by myriad security problems that demand concerted action and cooperation. As a negotiating power, it seeks to persuade Iran to forswear a nuclear weapons programme. As a crisis manager it seeks to contribute to global peace and stability through civilian and military operations. Closer to home, it is wrestling with questions about membership enlargement, large-scale migration and terrorist threats to the security of its populations and infrastructure. European governments, already under financial strain from ageing workforces and welfare systems, face ever more difficult choices about budget cuts in security and defence after the near-collapse of the global banking system. Will it be possible to enhance cooperation between member states? How can the EU complete its transition from a security actor with great potential to a player that credibly aligns available policy instruments and resources? These and other issues about the very nature and identity of the Union are explored in this Adelphi. From the need to establish its hard-power credentials, overcome its reluctance to demonstrate them against non-compliant states, and leverage its relationships with other great powers, to attempts to break its dependence on Russian energy, it is clear the EU has its work cut out. But, by affirming its commitment to multilateralism and defining a careful balance between closer cooperation and the national security concerns of EU member states, this book suggests, the European Union can build on its status as a global security power in the making.

Excerpt: The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was a civil defence organisation operating in the United Kingdom between 29 October 1925 and 31 December 1995, when the Corps’ civilian volunteers were stood down. (ROC headquarters staff at RAF Bentley Priory stood down on 31 March 1996). Composed mainly of civilian spare-time volunteers, ROC personnel wore a Royal Air Force (RAF) style uniform and latterly came under the administrative control of RAF Strike Command and the operational control of the Home Office. Civilian volunteers were trained and administered by a small cadre of professional full-time officers under the command of the Commandant Royal Observer Corps; latterly a serving RAF Air Commodore. In 1925, following a Defence Committee initiative undertaken the previous year, the formation of an RAF command concerning the Air Defence of Great Britain led to the provision of a Raid Reporting System, itself delegated to a sub-committee consisting of representatives from the Air Ministry, Home Office and the General Post Office. This Raid Reporting System was to provide for the visual detection, identification, tracking and reporting of aircraft over Great Britain, and was eventually to become known as the Observer Corps. The Observer Corps was subsequently awarded the title Royal by His Majesty King George VI in April 1941, in recognition of service carried ou… More:

 The Home Guard

The Home Guard

$12.95

During the uncertain early months of World War 2, many feared that it was only a short time before an attempt would be made to invade a woefully undefended British mainland. What became Home Guard was formed in February 1940 to help defend Britain’s shores from attack, initially just in Dover, but, after the beginning of Hitler’s Blitzkrieg, all over Britain.Originally called the Local Defence Volunteers, this army of men, drawn from those too old and too young to enlist in the regular army were equipped with uniforms, equipment and the know-how to repel the invader-at least such was the goal.Huge numbers volunteered and by midsummer 1940 1.5 million men had been recruited.

Chain reactions of insanely comic escapades follow, with disaster piled on disaster, leadi
